Anthony T. Caneris

October 22, 1936 — December 16, 2024

Anthony (Tony) Thomas Caneris of Cincinnati, Ohio fell asleep in the heavenly house of the Lord on December 16, 2024. He was born on October 22, 1936, in Steubenville, Ohio. He always had a special fondness for the city of his birth and made pilgrimages back whenever possible, often with grandchildren in tow. He was the son of the late Tom and Angeliki who immigrated from Chios, Greece. Surviving him is his loving and devoted wife Antoinette Georgeton Caneris who was the love of his life and was always by his side. While he held many professional achievements, his true joy and legacy are in his three sons and daughter: Tom Caneris (Joanna) of Mason, Ohio, Onassis Caneris, MD (Mike Flohr) of Cincinnati, Ohio, Angel Mohler (David) of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Adonis Caneris (Ana Maria) of Cincinnati, Ohio. He had a deep and special relationship with all of his grandchildren who regularly sought his loving advice and guidance: Alexandra Antoinette Baker (Anthony), Anthony David Mohler, Anthony Thomas Caneris (Regina), Andrew Peter Caneris, Athena Maria Caneris, Adonis Patrick Caneris, Andre Onassis Caneris and his great-grandson Theodore Telemahos Baker. Tony is also survived by his beloved sister Mary Sebbie Migias (John), his two nephews; George Migias (and family) and Harold Migias (and family) as well as several nieces and nephews on the Georgeton side of the family.

In 1954 Tony graduated from “Big Red” Steubenville High School in Ohio, and he graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1960 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. U.C. was the first co-op school in the country, so he co-opted for Weirton Steel Company in Weirton, West Virginia from 1955-1961. He became a lifelong fan of the Bearcats and subsequently all of his children followed in his footsteps to obtain degrees from the University of Cincinnati.

Tony worked at the University of Cincinnati from 1973-1995 in various managerial and professional positions. In 1995 he was recruited by Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as a Senior Vice President. He led 20 major departments including the Athletic Department and Student Life. At Drexel, he and Antoinette are remembered for transforming the University to a world class educational institution and tripling the enrollment during his tenure. Tony especially enjoyed his interactions with the Drexel students and was a mainstay at all of Drexel’s home and away games. The University honored Tony by naming a major dormitory in his honor upon his retirement. The student body also established a significant endowment in his and Antoinette’s name.

Tony had a special gift for recognizing potential in others. Throughout his time in Steubenville, Cincinnati and Philadelphia he mentored many young individuals, helping them achieve their dreams.

Tony was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Steubenville, Ohio, where he was an altar boy from 1945-1961. He was also a member of Holy Trinity- Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Cincinnati, Ohio.
