Colonel Nelson Dean Smittle, a dedicated military officer, esteemed educator, and prolific aerospace artist, passed away on December 9, 2024, at the age of 90. A native of Cincinnati, he was born on September 19, 1934, and remained an influential figure within his community throughout his life.
Colonel Smittle's academic pursuits were notable; he earned a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Cincinnati in 1971 and was a graduate of the Air War College. His commitment to education led him to serve as an instructor of Fine Arts in the Princeton City School District and as an adjunct faculty member at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. His artistic talents flourished as he became a prolific aerospace artist, with works exhibited in local galleries, national museums, and art centers.
Colonel Smittle had a distinguished military career, serving in both the U.S. Army and the Air Force. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army Signal Corps in 1962 after graduating from Army ROTC. His leadership continued as he was assigned to Langley Air Force Base, where he served as the Director of Operations and Deputy Chief of Staff for Fixed Communications.
His military achievements were substantial; he was awarded 14 medals, including the Army Combat Infantry Badge and the Master Jump Wings, and earned distinguished qualifications as a ranger/airborne qualified master parachutist. In 2010, Colonel Smittle received the honor of induction into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame in recognition of his extensive contributions to military service.
Beyond his military accomplishments, Colonel Smittle was particularly proud of his role as a Military Analyst for various media channels, including the Jim Scott Morning Drive on 700 WLW AM Radio and WCPO-TV Tri-State Morning News following the events of September 11, 2001. This engagement allowed him to passionately advocate for significant causes such as The Wounded Warrior Project and the Disabled American Veterans.
