CHAPMAN
James Harlan died January 23, 2018, at home in Cincinnati. Born June 19, 1926, in Portage, Pennsylvania, he was raised in Lorain, Ohio. Known by friends and family as Dyke, he became an avid reader and swimmer. After graduation in the top of his class at Lorain H.S., he served in the U.S. Army during WW II where he was a rifleman instructor. The G.I. Bill helped him earn Bachelor Degrees from Baldwin Wallace College and Carnegie Institute of Technology. He was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi. In 1952, Jim went to work for Procter and Gamble at Ivorydale as a mechanical engineer. In his 39 year career with the company, Jim Chapman led the development of disposable diapers and Always. He valued the challenge and sense of purpose in his work. After retirement, he never stopped exploring. He enjoyed sailing, world travel, R.V. adventures to spend time with his immediate and extended family. He enjoyed snowmobiling for nearly 40 years with his last snowmobile trip in February 2017 with his sons and many of his grandsons. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Carole; sons and daughters, Candice and Thomas Hennessy, James and Peggy Chapman, Linda Fox, Barry and Lynn Chapman; 15 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren for whom Big Umm was larger than life. His was a life well lived and thoroughly enjoyed. Visitation and Funeral Service Monday, January 29, 4:00 to 7:00, at Vitt, Stermerand Anderson Funeral Home, 4619 Delhi Road.
