It’s the little things that seem to stand out the most about Becky -- her down-to-earth nature, her iced tea and fried chicken, the aroma of marijuana throughout her house, and the way that she said “Hello, beautiful” with her face lighting up when she saw you. It’s certain that everyone who knew her has similar memories. They are good memories, something to cherish. It isn’t often in life that we come across someone so special that the person stays with you forever. Becky was that kind of person.
Early in life, Becky was in the Brownies and Girl Scouts and played bass guitar. She enjoyed the outdoors, playing sports. She collected frogs and owls throughout her life, calling frogs her spirit animal.
Becky liked to travel. Memorable trips for her were going to New York and Chicago. One of the things that one would notice in Becky’s house was that she had a green thumb. She lovingly tended to her plants both inside and out of her home. In her free time, she loved to watch sports, specifically basketball and football. She was a Warriors Fan. She loved to BBQ, go fishing, to watch Lottery Dream Homes on HGTV and she loved her animals; but especially her dog Baby. She was modest about it, but she was a fabulous cook. And, she loved chocolate and ice cream just like her mom. She had a big personality and would let you know exactly what she thought, loudly. In her later years, her favorite way to start the day was to have coffee, smoke a blunt, and to take a long walks through her neighborhood.
There were always a lot of people at Becky’s house, sometimes because she would take in people that others would turn their backs on. She was the type of person who would give you the shirt off her back but would also expect you to stand on your own two feet. Most of her life she was a homemaker and caregiver.
According to Mama, she wanted to be loved the way she loved others. Becky cared more than most, loved more than most. When she had your back…she had your back! She was loyal to a fault.
The kind of love that Becky felt for family and friends was without condition. Her four children were the best things that happened in her life. What an incredible legacy that will live on through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
There will be times in our lives when situations will arise where we’ll want so much to talk to her, be with her, or ask her what we should do. When those times come, she asked that we begin to look toward each other and find that part of her that she gave to each of us. Her hope is that we can learn to lean on each other and rely on each other the way we always knew that we could with her. Maybe then she won’t seem quite so far away.
Her parting message to everyone is the lyrics to Bob Marley’s “Every Little Thing is Gonna Be Alright” which she would often sing.
